Today I am mostly walking round with a smile on my face. Still pinching myself with this news….
Judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers, as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. Recognised as a stamp of excellence among consumers and retailers alike, Great Taste values taste above all else, with no regard for branding and packaging.
There were 12,366 Great Taste entries this year and of those products, 165 have been awarded a 3-star, 1,011 received a 2-star and 3,171 were awarded a 1-star accolade.
Ma Baker was awarded 3 Stars for her Porridge Bread and 2 Stars for her Sourdough Rye with Fennel and Sultana. Not bad for this one girl band who has only been baking for the last three years.
Comments from the judges included:
A very attractive loaf, with chewy, almost crumpet-like crumb and a slight, natural sweetness. It does indeed make great toast. We really like the wonderful oat flavour and amazing crisp surface, whilst it still manages to remain moist and flavourful in the centre. Very clever baking and a most enjoyable loaf. Gorgeous oaty appearance and very appealing golden colour. Perfectly baked with a lovely density. A little butter brought out the flavours of this fantastic bread. Toasted, it was even better!
Eats well untoasted but comes into its own when toasted, which raises it to an outstanding level.
Rye with Fennel and Sultana:
A handsome loaf, gorgeous pattern on the crust. It has an even rise and relatively light crumb, contrasting very well with the chewy, caramel, full-flavoured crust. The flavours are well balanced, the sultanas being lovely pops of sweetness. The fennel is well judged and blends in well with the rye.
So loving this bread journey.
